Lilongwe – The September 24-26 Victoria Falls Sports Tourism Experience Festival will promote sports tourism, market Zimbabwe as an international destination and promote sustainable development in the resort town, an official has said.
The festival is a collaboration between the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) and Sport Tourism Inc.
ZTA head of corporate affairs Mr Godfrey Koti said, “We saw an opportunity to market the destination using sports. The festival will help us propel the domestic tourism drive that is currently underway, the ZimBho campaign. (‘Bho’ is a colloquial term for ‘good’.)
“The sports tourism concept is now a big product across the globe. We believe that there is a massive opportunity for collaboration with sport to further reach critical masses. This will allow us to position Zimbabwe as a must visit destination for both local and international tourists.”
Before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, sports tourism was becoming one of the fastest growing sectors of the global travel industry.
Zimbabwe developed the sports tourism festival to revive the country’s tourism sector. The festival will incorporate golf, tennis, mountain biking, marathon and aerobic events, which will be hosted at various venues with COVID-19 regulations being observed.
Mr Malvin Kanjere, the public relations and marketing director of Ecotourism Africa and Sports Tourism Inc said, “We have been fortunate to collaborate with a diverse array of partners and sponsors to make this happen because we are all focused on the same goal: enhancing domestic tourism and supporting the recovery efforts.”
