Harare – The Namibia Rugby Union has named a 40-man provisional line-up for the Welwitschias that will face Zimbabwe’s Sables in two friendly matches next month as part of their Africa Cup preparations.
The Sables host the first match on June 12 before the two sides clash again on June 19 in Windhoek.
The 40-man Namibia squad will be trimmed to 26 on May 31 and was picked by interim national coach Robbie Dickson from a list of more than 70 players who reported for national rugby trials at Hage Geingob Stadium on May 17.
Dickson said, “I think we can pick a squad from Windhoek alone that’s good enough to beat Zimbabwe. There’s so much talent in Namibian rugby right now, especially in our club rugby structures, while we have players coming from the north, from the coast and Windhoek itself, so I’m pretty sure we can get the job done.
“Zimbabwe is always a difficult test, they are big physical guys, so it’s going to be hard rugby, but our forwards are hard and tough so they are not scared of size, and I’m pretty sure we will be able to do the job with them.”
The Welwitschias are using the two friendlies against the Sables to fine-tune for the Africa Cup that is set for July this year. Namibia host the Africa Cup and have been placed in Pool A with Madagascar and Cote d’Ivoire.
The Sables went into camp a week ago ahead of the Welwitschias clash. They will first take on Zambia on June 2 and 5 before the two matches against Namibia.
