Harare – A choral group that was hastily assembled to audition for Season 2 of the Old Mutual Amazing Voices show has surprised many by progressing to the final stages of the competition.
Participants were selected from five countries through a closed virtual audition, resulting in singers from South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and Zimbabwe making the cut. Two groups per country were selected.
From Zimbabwe came The Effect and The Unveiled. The Effect was eliminated last week, leaving The Unveiled – which came together just before the show started – as Zimbabwe’s remaining participants.
Despite being viewed as the runt of the litter, so to speak, the inexperienced lot made it all the way to the top three of the competition.
In an interview with The Southern Times Arts, Joshua Mutima – who assembled The Unveiled – said the journey had been hard but rewarding.
They are camped in Sun City, South Africa where Week 13 of the competition is running.
“We are so grateful for how far we have come. We are a young team and we are in the same competition as experienced, seasoned artists and so we have been exposed to that and we are learning so much. Episodes 7 and 8 were really hard for us, but with the support and encouragement of people who have been following our journey, we found the will to pull up our socks and put our best foot forward again.
“We are so humbled by how engaged people have been and we cannot thank them enough. The Competition is not easy but every day is a blessing,” said Mutima.
Winners of the competition will walk away US$100,000 richer, a fortune for any choral group anywhere in the world.
The pressures of competing at the highest level were heavy on The Unveiled, which had no set routines prior to entering a show in which they were competing against groups that had been together for years.
“Putting together dance routines and harmonies and having to perform them in a short space of time (was tough),” said Mutima. “Getting to know personalities has also been a hurdle we have had to overcome. Being a newly established team, the competition brought out the best and the worst in people but by grace we have managed to accommodate and love each other.”
It has been a huge leap of faith, as the 13 members of the group suspended pursuit of their daily bread to stake it all on Amazing Voices.
Now they are dreaming of out-singing and out-performing their two final contenders to take the crown.
