Windhoek – South Africa’s Standard Bank Group has dominated nominations for this year’s edition of the African Banker Awards, which recognise financial institutions that are innovating in various ways in the sector on the continent.
Standard Bank has eight entries in seven categories, including African Bank of the Year and Investment Bank of the Year.
The Eastern and Southern African Trade & Development Bank, also features prominently with five nominations, including a nomination for its president and CEO Mr Admassu Tadesse in the African Banker of the Year category.
The awards ceremony will be livestreamed on June 23, to coincide with the annual meetings of the African Development Bank, the event’s high patron. Major sponsors this year are the African Guarantee Fund, Nigeria’s Bank of Industry, Banque du Développement du Mali and TagPay.
Mr Omar Ben Yedder, the group publisher of African Banker magazine said: “This year we received a record number of entries across all categories and the awards committee debated at length to select the shortlist. Common themes throughout were the rise of digitisation, the work the banks have done to support businesses of all sizes during the pandemic and the importance of innovation.
“All the entries received demonstrated the incredible resilience of the banking and financial services industry during these challenging times and how important the industry is to help soften the economic impact of the pandemic and support growth whilst leading on innovation to provide solutions to our businesses and communities.”
There will also be a Lifetime Achievement Award, as well as a Banker Icon Award, a Minister of Finance of the Year Award and Regional Banking Awards.
