Lusaka - Motivated by the rise in global feature film production, Zambia has joined the industry with the production of a blockbuster movie titled ‘The Borderline’.

Having premiered in Lusaka at the Ster Kinekor Cinema on 4 December, produced and authored by renowned producer, Peter Langmead, the feature film, with a cast of over 40-star artists, is undoubtedly the first of its kind to be produced in Zambia. Given its plot, theme and climax of the production, the film is set to leave one grilled to the seat.

The Borderline pays homage to the “film noir” genre.  Film noir (dark film) is a style of movie characterised by a mood of pessimism, fatalism, and menace exemplified by Hollywood crime dramas, as adduced through synopsis.

The theme centres on a tragic story of love, betrayal and crime in a riverside village that is terrorised as three brothers seek the truth about the childhood trauma that changed the course of their lives.

Family secrets and jealousy spill over into madness as the brothers go on the rampage, leaving a trail of destruction as they battle to find the truth, each in search of their own redemption.   As they try to make sense of the world, identities, dreams and realities collide.  Nothing is as it seems.

Shot on location in Chisamba, north of the capital Lusaka and the Lower Zambezi, south of Lusaka, the film boasts of highly-gamed artists, among others Dixon Ngoma, an upcoming actor, and Marie Mutinta, another budding artist but worth recognizing for their good character leading roles.

Nancy Handabile, an award-winning actress, also known for her exceptional performances in Love Games and Zuba, the local movies being screened on DStv’s Zambezi Magic, also forms part of the cast.

A statement by Langmead and Baker says the production’s premiere night, which attracted scores of reputed names, including the National Arts Council, regulators of the arts industry in Zambia, was bolstered by local and global film producers and related crews.

These included renowned BBC lighting cameraman, Denis Borrow (Superman, The Queen at 80) and Richard Attenborough (A Life in Film, Piers Morgan On, William & Kate: A Royal Engagement) who was director of photography, assisted by Leelee Ngwenya, Tozya Botah and Kalenga Mwansa.

NAC chairman, Patrick Samwimbila, and Alliance Francais director, Julie Girard, were in the audience and could not hide their views on the production of the local movie content and the stories being told not only to Zambians, but the world.

Langmead could not hide his pleasure at the outcome of the production adding: “Producing a film that stays true to the Zambia rural and urban life was a challenge that the whole cast and crew worked hard at.

“The Borderline tells a very powerful story about what people can do when they are in love and desperate. It is also believed to be the first film noir movie to be produced in Zambia. That is very exciting.”

The ‘Borderline’ becomes the second film to be produced by Langmead and Baker.  In 2016 it released Damyna the Musical, which was screened at Festival International du Film PanAfricain held in Cannes, France, at which lead actress Josephine Kachiza won the Dikalo award for best actress.
