Johannesburg – Zama Khumalo won over the hearts of South Africans and won the Idols SA Season 16 crown this past week.

The 19-year-old singer from Emalahleni won the title during the music contest’s grand finale at the State Theatre in Tshwane on December 13.

After the cumulative 180 million votes over the season ended with Khumalo being named the winner, the excited singer enthused: “I’m really blessed, thank you very much South Africa.”

After being announced the winner, she showed just why she had swept away the competition with a rocking performance for her new single, “Ndizobizwa”, to close Season 16 of the reality show.

“My single speaks about how all my peers have been called and I’m the only one left behind but God’s timing is the right time. It’s relevant in my life because this year with Idols, I got my calling,” she said.

Idols SA posted a clip of the singer thanking her friends on Instagram: "Thank you so so much South Africa. I feel so blessed; I can't believe this is happening. Thank you so much for your support, ally your love and all your beautiful messages for keeping me strong guys, God bless each and every one of you. I can't believe this.”

The new Mzansi Idol walked away with a prize package consisting of a recording deal with Kalawa Jazmee, R150,000 (about US$10,000) worth of Samsung products, the new Toyota Starlet 1.4, R100,000 (US$6,700) worth of Truworths fashion, a Kymco Xciting 400 scooter worth R120,000 (about US$8,000), and R80,000 (about US$5,300) worth of musical instruments from Yamaha.

“We are excited that once again, Mzansi Magic has provided platforms for young South Africans to launch their careers, and this season was no different. We would like to congratulate tonight’s winner as well as all the contestants that were part of this season.

“As the competition continues to open up the industry, we would like to also express our gratitude to our valued sponsors for all the amazing prizes that our winner will get, as well as thank all our viewers for taking time to vote,” said Nomsa Philiso, director of local entertainment channels at M-Net.

Idols SA will return for a 17th season, starting with online auditions on dates to be announced. Hopefuls will record themselves and submit the clips.
