Windhoek – Former Brave Warriors goalkeeper, Virgil Vries, has signed for South African glamour side Kaizer Chiefs Football Club (FC) as a free agent following his release by Baroka FC at the end of the 2017/18 season
According to online reports, Vries has already started training with the Soweto giants.
Vries joins Kaizer Chiefs as a replacement for Brilliant Khuzwayo, who recently joined Orlando Pirates after spending years as an understudy to number one goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune.
The media reports quoted Kaizer Chiefs’ football manager, Bobby Motaung, telling the club’s official website that after Khuzwayo left, they wanted to get a seasoned goalkeeper to assist Khune.
“We have a few talented youngsters like Bruce Bvuma and Brylon Petersen who need to work with experienced keepers. We welcome Virgil.”
The reports suggest he has signed a three-year deal.
Vries spent the last season with Baroka FC, whom he joined after being released by Maritzburg United at the end of the 2016/17 season. The Namibian shot-stopper becomes the fourth signing by Kaizer Chiefs following the arrival of Khama Billiat, Letlhogonolo Mirwa and Andriamirado Andrianarimanana. In Namibia, Vries played for Fedics, a lower division team, Orlando Pirates and Eleven Arrows.
He follows in the footsteps of Namibians like Pius Eigowab, Herman Blaschke, Oscar Mengo, Ishmael Lemmy Narib, Mohammed Ouseb and Robert Nauseb to have donned the famous black and gold jersey of Amakhosi, as Kaizer Chiefs is widely known to its supporters. – Nampa
