Lilongwe – Malawi’s Local Government Minister Lingson Belekanyama, and the Minister of Transport and Public Works Sidik Mia, have died from COVID-19 Tuesday.

Government spokesperson Gospel Kazako and Health Minister Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda separately confirmed the deaths.

Last week, the Presidential Taskforce Committee on COVID-19 said Belekanyama had tested positive for the virus and had gone into self-isolation. Belekanyama was part of the taskforce.

On the other hand, Mia announced on Facebook that he had contracted COVID-19.

Both ministers died early Tuesday morning.

As of January 11, 2021, Malawi had recorded 452 new positive cases, taking the number of active cases to 2,744. The death toll has exceeded 230 since the first case was recorded on April 2, 2020.

In a radio address last Sunday, President Lazarus Chakwera urged the nation not to politicise the pandemic and instead work as one to combat the shared threat posed by the new coronavirus.

The Malawi Police Service has deployed officers across the country to ensure compliance with restrictions on gatherings, compulsory wearing of face masks, and observance of social distancing regulations.
