Windhoek - The English Football Championship 2020/21 season began on a bad note for the Namibia’s versatile defender Ryn Nyambe (Blackburn Rovers) and Congolese striker and Britt Assombalonga (Middlesborough) as their teams drew and lost, respectively, in the first round of matches last weekend.
Nyambe’s Blackburn Rovers are yer to win on the opening day of the season since beating Everton back in 2010.
Despite the slow start to Blackburn’s campaign, Nyambe had an impressive individual performance and made it to the WhoScored Championship Team of the Week with a rating of 8.2 in the draw with Bournemouth.
The Namibia international said on his Twitter handle after the game, and ahead of the game against Newscastle United: “Tough one to take yesterday but lots of positives to take from it! On to Tuesday!”
Nyambe appeared 33 times in 2019-20, and surpassed a century of games for Rovers in that campaign, solidifying his status as a key squad member.
Averaging 33 passes per match with a pass completion rate of 70 percent, in addition to providing one assist, there are high hopes of Nyambe enhancing his status as one of the leagues’s most reliable defenders.
Middlesborough captain Assombalonga could not save his team from going down 0-1 to Watford, who we’re relegated from the EPL last season.
Assombalonga provided his team’s greatest attacking threat, and had he made more of a pair of half-chances either side of half-time, ‘Boro could have had a positive result.
He scored 11 goals in 36 appearances in the 2019/20 season, including five in the last seven games, as he helped ‘Boro avoid relegation.
