Most SADC artistes continue to miss out on the prestigious Black Entertainment Awards (BET) that are held annually to recognise outstanding work by black artists worldwide.
South Africa (SA) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are the only countries from the Southern African Development Community region that were represented in the Best International Act Award at the recently held 2018 BET awards in Los Angeles, United States.
The category comprised of Booba (France) ,Cassper Nyovest (SA) ,Dadju (France), Davido (Nigeria), Distruction Boyz (SA), Fally Ipupa (DRC), J Hus (UK), Niska (France), Tiwa Savage (Nigeria), Stefflon Don (UK), Stormzy (UK).
Nigerian star Davido from Nigeria scooped the award.
Last year, the Best International Act category comprised of Teckno (Nigeria), Mr Eazi (Nigeria), Davido (Nigeria), Wizkid (Nigeria) Stonebwoy (Ghana), AKA (SA), Nasty C (SA), Babes Wodumo (SA).
Wizkid from Nigeria scooped the award.
In 2016 , South Africa's Black Coffee scooped the award in the category which comprised of Wizkid (Nigeria), AKA (SA), Cassper Nyovest (SA), Diamond Platnumz ( Tanzania), Mzvee (Ghana) Serge Beynaud ( Cote d’ Ivoire ) and Yemi Alade ( Nigeria).
Despite having exceptionally talented artistes in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Botswana, Malawi, Namibia and Angola, none from these countries have in the recent past won any award at BET awards.
However, the dry spell was briefly ended in 2015 when Tinashe Jorgensen Kachingwe an R n B – United States based Zimbabwean artist was nominated under the Best New Artist Category.
The nominations for the various BET wards categories are selected by the BET Voting Academy made up of fans together with experts from television, film, social media, sports, creative arts and music.
A platform is also opened for fans to vote for their preferred artists.
