SA, Zimbabwe solidify relations as Ramaphosa visits

HARARE - ZIMBABWE has strengthened its relations with South
Africa following the visit by the latter’s President Cyril Ramaphosa and
his delegation to Harare.
The visit comes as Zimbabwe looks up to regional allies and African member
states to bust sanctions imposed by America and the European Union (EU)
following its land reform programme.
“It is an honour to welcome President Cyril Ramaphosa to Zimbabwe. The
strength and depth of our relationship is the epitome of true brotherhood,
of a common people with a shared past and destiny. You are a key and true
ally. I am looking forward to a fruitful visit,” said Zimbabwean leader,
Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Mnangagwa and his two deputies, Constantino Chiwenga and Kembo Mohadi,
were among government officials that welcomed Ramaphosa on Monday.

This was ahead of third Bi-National Commission Summit (BNC) between the
two neighbouring countries.

“Our relationship, like crops, requires constant cultivation and watering.
Come rain or sunshine, it is incumbent upon us to ensure that it remains
vibrant, yielding a good harvest for our people. More importantly, let us
ensure that our relations and historical bonds transcend generations and
grow stronger with the passage of time,” Mnangagwa said.

Ramaphosa hailed Zimbabwe as a strategic and dependable partner.

The two countries enjoy solid relations since the end of apartheid in
South Africa in 1994.

“Our fortunes remain bound together. Our visit to Zimbabwe to attend the
third session of BNC is a clear statement of our shared commitment to
working together,” Ramaphoda said.

“We must employ the same resolve with which we fought the scourge of
apartheid to combat the triple challenge of unemployment, poverty and
inequality. We must use the BNC mechanism to consolidate and deepen our
bilateral relations.”

Earlier this month, Botswana confirmed a financial bailout of BWP1 billion
($100 million) when President Mokgweetsi Masisi visited Harare.
