WINDHOEK – Russian Foreign Affairs Minister Sergey Lavrov will pay a three-day official visit to Namibia commencing from 5-7 March 2018, the Ministry of International Relations and Co-operation has said.

In a statement, the ministry said the purpose of Lavrov’s visit is to exchange views on a wide range of bilateral and international issues of mutual interest.

“During his visit His Excellency Mr. Sergey Lavrov will hold bilateral talks with Honourable Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, and pay a courtesy call on His Excellency Dr. Hage G. Geingob, President of the Republic of Namibia,” the ministry said.

Namibia and Russia maintain excellent relations that date back to the pre-independence era.

Bilateral cooperation exists through the Namibian-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation established in July 2006 under the framework of the Agreement signed on 18 July 2005.

The Inter-Governmental Commission has since inception held seven sessions, of which the last one was in Windhoek from 15-16 November 2017.

The eighth session is scheduled to take place in Moscow during 2018.

“Through the Inter-Governmental Commission, the two countries have concluded bilateral instruments in sectors such as health, education, defence and security, mines and energy, trade and investments, fisheries as well as tourism.

“The two countries wish to expand their cooperation in both new and existing sectors of mining, energy, justice, wildlife protection and national parks management,” the ministry said.
