Promoters in Botswana keep it local ahead of busy Easter

Gaborone - Botswana’s music shows promoters are largely staying within the borders, as they prepare to keep revellers on their toes over the long Easter weekend.

South African artists usually headline local shows, but promoters have kept it mostly local.

With most people travelling out of town to be with their family and friends, promoters have organised shows in the urban villages.

It is the first holiday in 2019 with Botswana showgoers enjoying a new lease of life under President Mokgweetsi Masisi.

Since taking over in April last year, Masisi has adopted a different approach to entertainment, compared to his predecessor, Ian Khama.

Entertainment hours were severely constricted under Khama, but Masisi has opened the booze gates, and the Botswana entertainment scene has come to life.

Roads will lead to various entertainment joints, starting on Thursday until Monday next week.

The cream of Botswana music will be in the Central District urban village of Mahalapye, where youthful artists, Han C of the smash hit, ‘Rejection’, La Timmy and Team Distance will perform at the Mahalapye Music Festival. Traditional music group, Culture Spears are part of the local only line-up.

Also, part of the line up are Eskimos, Bouncy and Wizards, as the local artists try to pull crowds without any aid from their counterparts from across the border.

La Timmy and Han C will then travel up west to Ghanzi for the Ghanzi Easter Extravaganza and again there are no international artists.

Local jazz artist, Shanti Lo, will go solo as he launches his new album in Gaborone.

Music promoter, Lecco Kenosi said most of the artists in South Africa are booked in their home country.

“This is an international holiday, which means the artists are booked in their respective countries,” Kenosi said.

He added that this year’s Easter holiday comes before most workers’ payday and that has an effect on the planning of promoters.

“You would not want to spend your budget and make losses. You would rather minimize at this time, and then go all out at the appropriate time (month end),” he said.
