Of the trendy female baguette handbag

Harare – Handbags are women’s favourite accessories, you cannot separate women and handbags; their shoes and handbags; and their outfits and handbags.

Irecall a colleague of mine once told me that ‘handbags are ladies best friends’ and for the first time, I agreed with him without scrutinising.

Handbags serve many purpose chief among them is that of a toiletry and accessory bag. Women need handbags to complement their outfits and enhance their appearance as well as boosting their confidence in public.

Although they come in different forms and types, today women in the region seem to be obsessed with the trendy baguette handbags.

Baguette handbags are relatively long from side to side and small from top to bottom, they usually come with a short handle which makes it easy for them to be carried by just the palm of a hand.

Previously, the fancy tote and frame were the ‘talk of the town’ but, now they seem to have been overtaken by the baguette.

The frame handbag is quite rigid and rectangular shaped. This type of handbag is usually carried on the shoulder while the tote, which is large double handled is carried on the arm.

The trendy baguette handbag can be used by any woman as long as the design suits their body shapes.

Fashion advisors have suggested that the best way for ladies to pick baguette handbags is to pick designs that contradict with their structures.

“The fact that the baguette is trendy doesn’t mean anyone can look good with it. Women need to observe the fashion policy of handbag on these trendy handbags,” Anotidaishe Mashiri, a fashion designer based in Westlea.

“The best way of selecting these baguettes is to pick a design that is opposite to your body structure.  For example, if one is tall and slim, it is ideal to choose a baguette handbag which has a rounded and slouchy design. The same applies when one is short and curvy, handbags with strong angles will look awesome on her,” she said.

She said if a tall person is seen carrying a teeny tiny baguette handbag, she will be looking ludicrous no matter how fancy the bag may be.

Mashiri, however, said short ladies have a variety of choices on frame and tote handbags compared to the baguette.

Greendale based fashion designer, Kudakwashe Ndlovu said baguette handbags can be enhanced with other accessories such as wrist watch, belts, and shoes among others.

“Although baguette handbags can come in sophisticated designs, plain ones are key because they can be accessorised to match different outfits.  When you carry a baguette handbag with a sophisticated design, people can easily notice that you are using one bag whereas if it is plain, you can change accessories depending on the outfit,” said Ndlovu.

“Baguette handbags are also coming with African material designs: dashiki, java, and waxie. However, having such designs will force you to be biased to ethnic outfits for the bag to be necessary.”

She said women with small body hips should carry the baguette handbags hanging on their elbow to make them more feminine.
