Windhoek- The National Reinsurance Corporation Ltd (NamibRe) last Friday donated over 44 blankets valued at R30 000 to Red Cross Namibia as part of the Donate a Blanket, Save a life campaign.

The blankets will be distributed to vulnerable families and individuals who are exposed to the harsh and freezing winter conditions in Namibia. NamibRe believes the donation responds to the needs of the targeted beneficiaries.

Namibre has been in collaboration with Red Cross since 2008 providing emergency assistance and disaster relief through the donation that reaffirms its commitment to support the government effort to fight poverty.

During the handover in Windhoek, NamibRe managing director Patty Karuaihe stated that stated that Namibia is one of the coldest countries during winter in Africa and not everyone has adequate to warm shelter.

“NambiRe have joined other corporations who have either engaged in fund raising activities to buy blankets and other materials for distribution to those in need. As part of our contribution, we have once again partnered with the red cross in this endeavor,” she said.

By offering these blankets, Karuaihe noted that NamibRe “hoped to contribute in a small way to relieve the needs of those most in need in our societies”.

Naemi Heita, the Secretary General of Namibia Red Cross has thanked NamibRe for the warm gesture.

It is during winter where we see requests increasing from families who are struggling to protect themselves from severe cold chills of winter and those houses that have been destroyed by fire. It is always quite heartbreaking to tell them to go and look for assistance somewhere else, if there are no blankets in the warehouse,” Heita said.

Through the year, Red Cross gets over 500 requests for support across, mainly blankets.

“We therefore appreciate organisations such as NamibRe for always coming to the aid of those in need through the generous donation of blankets. This donation will go a long way in saving lives and alleviating human suffering,” Heita said.

“We are appealing to the corporate sector and individuals to join hands with organizations such as the Namibia Red Cross and ensure that together we can come to the aid of Namibians who are currently struggling to make ends meet due to their social circumstances”.

Donate a Blanket, Save a Life is the annual winter campaign during which Red Cross lead with the individuals and corporate sector to donate blankets for the needy to keep warm during the cold season.
