Meet 2018 Zim elections presidential candidates

Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangaga

Emmerson Mnangagwa is the leader of the ruling ZANU-PF party and Zimbabwe's third president since its independence in 1980. He fled to South Africa for safety after being fired as vice president by then President Robert Mugabe late last year but returned victorious after Mugabe resigned. He fashions himself as a reformer and one destined to deliver a prosperous Zimbabwe.

 

Nelson Chamisa

Nelson Chamisa is the current MDC Alliance presidential candidate. Chamisa took over as the leader of the MDC following the death of founding leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, on February 14. Chamisa is Mnangagwa's main contender in the upcoming election. He was the youngest minister when he was the Minister of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the inclusive government formed in 2009.

 

 

Joice Teura Ropa Mujuru

Joice Mujuru is a former vice president of Zimbabwe before she was fired in 2014 when the then first lady Grace Mugabe alleged that she was planning to have her husband Robert Mugabe killed while he was president. Mujuru is the leader of the National People's Party (NPP).

 

Thokozani Khupe

 Thokozani Khupe is the leader of the MDC-T breakaway faction of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). She was deputy prime minister of Zimbabwe in the inclusive government from 11 February 2009 to August 2013. She was deputy president of Tsvangirai's MDC-T but was "dribbled" from power by Chamisa when the former prime minister died in February, leading to the emergence of two MDC factions - the MDC Alliance led by Chamisa and her MDC-T.

 

 

Nkosana Moyo

Nkosana Moyo is the Alliance for People's Agenda (APA) candidate. He is an economist and former Zimbabwe minister of industry and international trade.

Moyo has served many leading roles on an international scale such as the president and COO of the African Development Bank until 2011 and an associate director at the World Bank's International Finance Corporation.

 

Blessing Kasiyamhuru

Blessing Kasiyamhuru is the leader of the Zimbabwe Partnership for Prosperity. Kasiyamhuru calls himself an entrepreneur and academic. He holds various qualifications, including a PHD in public development management and a Masters in Management.

 

 

Elton Mangoma

Elton Mangoma is a Zimbabwean politician. He is the current presidential candidate for the Coalition of Democrats, a lose grouping of fringe political parties which will contest the 2018 harmonised elections. He is also the president of the Renewal of Democrats of Zimbabwe political party.

 

Lovemore Madhuku

 Lovemore Madhuku is the leader of the National Constitutional Assembly, a pressure group turned political party which advocated for a new constitution for Zimbabwe . After attaining his law degree in Zimbabwe, Madhuku earned a Beit Trust Fellowship to study at Oxford University and later transferred to the University of Cambridge. He is the author of the textbook, An Introduction to Zimbabwean Law.

 

 

Ambrose Mutinhiri

Leader the National Patriotic Front (NPF), Ambrose Mutinhiri, is a retired brigadier-general of the Zimbabwe National Army. He is also the father of Big Brother contestant and socialite Vimbai Mutinhiri. Mutinhiri is the former Member of Parliament for Marondera West on a ZANU-PF ticket and once served as Zimbabwe’s ambassador to Yugoslavia. He was a founder member of the military wing of the liberation party, Zimbabwe African People's Union. As a senior member of ZAPU, he also served as Zimbabwe People's Revolutionary Army (ZIPRA) chief of staff at some point.

 

Daniel Shumba

Daniel Shumba is the leader of the United Democratic Alliance. He is a former Zimbabwe army colonel and businessman. He is also a former ZANU-PF Central Committee member. In February 2018, Shumba announced that he had formed a political party named the United Democratic Alliance. This was the second party he had formed after the United People's Front.

 

 

Noah Ngoni Manyika

Noah Ngoni Manyika is the leader of the Build Zimbabwe Alliance. He has a master’s degree, PhD and a Bachelor’s Degree in various fields including journalism and Christian leadership. Manyika is a Zimbabwean politician and cleric based in the United States of America. He is the current leader of the political party, Build Zimbabwe Alliance, and a Senior Pastor of NeXus Church and president and founder of NeXus Ministries.

 

Divine Mhambi

Divine Mhambi Hove is the leader of the National Alliance of Patriotic and Democratic Party. Mhambi is also an entrepreneur and the founder of Divine Technologies Car Centre.

 

 

Bryn Taurai Mteki

Also known as Sekuru Tau, Bryn Taurai Mteki will contest in the Zimbabwe elections as an independent candidate. He is an artist and musician, and is the director of Mteki World Art (Private) Limited Group of Companies.

 

Melba Dzapasi

One of the four women presidential candidates, Melbah Dzapasi, is the leader of the #1980 Freedom Movement Zimbabwe.

 

 

Violet Mariyacha

Violet Mariyacha is the leader of the United Movements and Unions Party. Beside being a politician, Mariyacha is also a motivational speaker, songwriter and businesswoman.

 

Timothy Chiguvare

 Timothy Chiguvare is the leader of the People's Progressive Party (PPP).

 

Harry Peter Wilson

Harry Peter Wilson is the leader of the newly formed Democratic Opposition Party (DOP). The party is a breakaway from Simba Makoni's Mavambo/Kusile/Dawn. Wilson says he broke away from Makoni because he had "realised that Makoni was still somehow attached to his former party, ZANU-PF".

 

Mapfumo Peter Gava

Mapfumo Peter Gava is the candidate for United Democratic Front.

 

Kwanele Hlabangana

Kwanele Hlabangana is the leader of the Republicans Party of Zimbabwe. Hlabangana is also the co-founder of UNISA-Africa Girl Development Programme which invests in girl thought leaders. He has also gone into business ventures with companies like Vodacom and Hewlett Packard.

 

 

Joseph Makamba Busha

Joseph Makamba Busha is the leader of FreeZim. He was born on June 16, 1966 in Harare. He attended the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. He has four degrees, one diploma and seven professional certificates in mathematical finance. Busha says he has a "deep understanding of the world's financial system".

 

Tendai Peter Munyanduri

Tendai Peter Munyanduri is the leader of the New Patriotic Front (NPF). He is an electrical engineer with qualifications in Business Administration and Strategic Management at Master’s Degree Level.

 

 

William Taonezvi Mugadza

William Tawonezvi Mugadza is the leader of the Bethel Christian Party.

 

Washington Evaristo Chikanga

Washington Evaristo Chikanga is the president of the Rebuild Zimbabwe party.
