23rd November 2020, Johannesburg, World Cup winner and Springbok winger Makazole Mapimpi has joined forces with his manager and businesswoman Sibabalwe Sesmani in launching Unorthodox Sport.
It is an often occurrence to see retired professional athletes in need of financial assistance because of bad decision making made in their earlier years. It is also very common for them to not commercialise fully on their brand during their peak and being stuck in deals that are negatively skewed to their advantage.
Unorthodox Sport was born from this dire need of athlete’s brands being structured, protected and making sure that they are sustainable far beyond retirement. The services offered by Unorthodox Sport are strategic exposure to media, brokering favourable endorsement deals and access to financial and investment planning. The organisation is a global company that will also focus on signing athletes to local and global clubs.
“Not everyone is as lucky as I am to get the opportunity that I received to play for the Springboks, that is why I started this company to provide exposure to the many talented athletes across all sporting codes that may otherwise go unnoticed” - Makazole Mapimpi, Non Executive at Unorthodox Sport.
“Unorthodox Sport is breaking so many barriers in solving a real issue in the sports industry, not only that, but it is also allowing me as a woman to participate in this heavily male dominated industry and make room for more women to participate in the value chain of the sporting world.”- Sibabalwe Sesmani, Group CEO at Unorthodox Group
Unorthodox Sport is a subsidiary of Unorthodox Group that also has a public relations wing called Unorthodox PR. More information can be found on www.unorthodox-group.com
