Harare - A concert dubbed “Back in Town” featuring the South African duo, Mafikizolo, which was slated for this Friday in Harare was canceled at the last minute as Zimbabweans threatened to boycott the show following the ongoing xenophobic attacks that have left five people killed and many injured, while others lost their property and businesses in South Africa.
The show was hanging in balance ever since the attacks started, with Zimbabweans circulating #MuteMafikizolo messages on social media in solidarity with victims of xenophobic attacks.
Organizers of the show were initially confident that the show would go ahead despite the social media threats and they even urged all the Mafikizolo fans in Harare to attend the show wearing black turbans in honour of those who lost their lives to the xenophobic attacks.
But the show was canceled at the last minute and the organisers had, at the time of writing, not issued a statement on whether the show would be held in future since fans had already bought tickets.
According to Blessing Jeke, the concert organiser and promoter, the South African duo did not support the xenophobic attacks and they were ready to perform in Zimbabwe.
Jeke stated that the South African duo was ready to show their commitment against xenophobia by recording a song against xenophobia with some Zimbabwean artists.
He also stated that a part of the concert proceeds was going to be donated to xenophobia victims.
“Mafikizolo condemns xenophobia. They will record a song against xenophobia along with some local artists" Jeke said in an interview before the show was canceled.
