Local Flames to lead Malawi in AFCON

Lilongwe - The head coach of Malawi’s senior men’s national football team, Meck Mwase, has a named a 29 locally-based players in his squad ahead of the 2022 Africa Cup Nations qualifiers.

The Flames have been pitted against Burkina Faso, South Sudan and Uganda in the qualifiers.

Among those in contention for starting berths are goalkeepers Bright Munthali (Silver Strikers), William Thole (Mighty Wanderers), Ernest Kakhobwe (Nyasa Big Bullets), Charles Thom (Silver Strikers) and Jailosi Kapalamula (MAFCO).

The defensive options are Stanley Sanudi (Be Forward Wanderers) Peter Cholopi (Mighty Wanderes), Precious Sambani, (Nyasa Big Bullets) Nickson Nyasulu, (Nyasa Big Bullets), Paul Ndhlovu (MAFCO), Elick Kawonga (Ekwendeni Hammers) and Mark Fodya (Silver Strikers).

In the middle of the park, the Flames will look to Chimwemwe Idana (Nyasa Big Bullets), Chikoti Chirwa (Red Lions), Rafick Namwera (Mighty Wanderers), Felix Zulu (Mighty Wanderers), Vitumbiko Kumwenda (Mighty Wanderers), Duncan Nyoni (Silver Strikers), Micium Mhone (Blue Eagles), Chimango Kayira (Nyasa Big Bullets), Patrick Banda (Ekwendeni Hammers) and Mphatso Magaleta (Ntopwa).

Mwese hopes the goal threat will be provided by the likes of Hassaan Kajoke (Nyasa Big Bullets), Stain Davie (Silver Strikers), Maxwell Mpodo (Silver Strikers), Royal Bokosi (Red Lions), Vincent Nyangulu (Mighty Wanderers) and Raphael Phiri (CIVO).

The Flames are third in their qualification group with four points, four behind leaders Burkina Faso and three behind second placed Uganda. South Sudan are bottom placed with three points.

Malawi’s national football will travel to South Sudan on March 3, 2021 before taking on Uganda at home in the next two rounds of qualifiers.
