Johannesburg - South Africa's seasoned actor, Desmond Dube, has said it is crucial to pay tribute to legends while they are still alive.

Dude, who also encouraged other artists to honour those who went before them, had been juggling acting gigs with directing theatre productions at the Soweto Theatre.

He said he wants to focus on documenting the lives of African legends.

"I am very passionate about documenting African stories, all African stories, not just black African stories. I am one of those artists who say 'why are we always going to England or America to have them tell our stories?' said Dude

Dube added that the world needs to be told the real story about the African continent and its countless heroes' remarkable lives.

"We have so much talent in this country and so many people who have come before us in the entertainment industry. We need to recognise them and appreciate them now while they are alive, not just mourn them when they die."

He also called on producers and filmmakers to invest in local stories and teach future generations about the pioneers of the SA entertainment industry.

"I hope that other opportunities will come for us to celebrate other people while they are still alive," he added.

Dude's call to honour living legends was also supported by local veteran actress Thembi Mtshali-Jones, who is set to be bestowed with a Living Legend Award at the 2019 National Theatre Festival in North Carolina, USA.

Jones said she was very grateful to be appreciated in such a way while she's still alive.

"It's really an honour to receive this award. For so many reasons, but the most important being that I am still alive to smell these flowers I am being given," she said.

Born on January 25 in 1969, Dube rose to become one of the most celebrated artists in Mzansi. Son of well-known actress Lillian Dube, Desmond featured in some of the best films, including Hotel Rwanda, Honeville and Long Run, the latter in which he starred opposite the award-winning actor Oscar nominee, Armin Mueller-Stahl.

Desmond is also a multilingual, award winning comedian, writer and producer.

He played an important role in social transformation through his philanthropic work and is respected as a devoted family man. He is also the brand ambassador for the Clientèle brand.
