Harare - Women's basketball clubs from Southern Africa have started preparing for the FIBA African Clubs Championship set for Egypt next month.
The tournament was not held last year due to COVID-19.
Most countries in Southern Africa suspended national basketball leagues last year as governments put restrictions on sports.
Some domestic competitions are yet to resume, which could interfere with preparations for the FIBA Championship.
For Zimbabwe’s reigning champions, Harare City Hornets, this is an opportunity for them to play the game competitively again for the first time since March 2020.
SADC Basketball League Chairman Sunny Mbofana said, "Basketball female teams that won league titles from Southern Africa have been invited to compete in the FIBA African Clubs Championship in Egypt next month. The teams are already preparing and it’s an inspiring development.
"We are excited by this move. It's been long since our clubs last played competitive basketball. For some clubs from this region, this will be the first time for their players to play in intensive competition since last year. We are very happy and looking forward to our teams' good performances."
From Southern Africa, clubs from Angola and Mozambique have traditionally performed well in continental competitions.
