Windhoek – World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Africa Middleweight Champion, Walter ‘The Executioner’ Kautondokwa, is now rated number two in the world by the boxing authority.
A media release issued by the Nestor ‘Sunshine’ Tobias Boxing and Fitness Academy on Monday said Kautondokwa will now become a mandatory challenger for the world title.
The current WBO world champion, Billy Joe Saunders and number one-rated contender Demetrius Andrade will step into the ring for a fight scheduled for either September or October this year.
After the Saunders versus Andrade fight, Kautondokwa will automatically become the mandatory challenger in the number one position and a world title fight is, therefore, imminent for him next year.
“I am excited by the progress I have made. Every month I am taking a step closer to the world title. One has to be patient and keep winning against quality opponents. I will be watching the Saunders versus Andrade fight with keen interest and I am ready to challenge whoever wins for the world title,” said an excited Kautondokwa.
Meanwhile, another world title prospect in the Welterweight division, current WBO Africa champion Mike Shonena, has moved one place up in the rankings from ninth to eighth position.
WBO Africa Junior Lightweight champion, Jeremiah ‘Low Key’ Nakathila remains firmly at number five in his division.
He is likely to move up in the ratings in August as the number one rated Christopher Diaz was defeated by number two rated Masayuki Ito over the past weekend for the vacant world title.
Nakathila must, however, win his fight against Wilson Masamba of Malawi on 3 August in Swakopmund. - Nampa
