Windhoek – Long-distance runner and 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Helalia Johannes was on Sunday crowned the winner of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon’s female category.

The Namibian, who specialises in marathon, ran a time of two hours, 29 minutes and 28 seconds (02:29:28) to become the new champion of the women's race.

Johannes broke the women’s course record of 02:30:20 which was set up by Isabella Ochichi of Kenya in 2015.

Failuna Matanga from Tanzania came second in a time of 02:30:00. Urge Sokoka Diro of Ethiopia finished third in 02:30:31.

Other Namibian athletes who competed in the female category were Anna Amukoto and Lavinia Haitope, who finished 11th and 12th, respectively.

In the male category, Namibia's Paulus Iiyambo finished the event 18th, while Ueni-Nawa Kugongwela was in 19th position.

South Africa's Stephen Mokoka won the men's race in 2:08.31, taking 10 seconds off the previous record of 2017 winner Asefa Negewu of Ethiopia. Mokoka was the first South African to win the race since 2010. - Nampa
