Cape Town - The year 2020 keeps getting better for the South African maker of the global craze known as “Jerusalema”, Master KG.
A few weeks after bagging the MTV EMA Award for Best African Act, Master KG has now been voted 2020 Artist of the Year 2020 in the Africa Music Magazine Awards (AFRIMMAs).
To get the latest honour, Master KG was up against competition from the likes of Burna Boy, Davido, Fally Ipupa and Sho Madjozi.
In addition to being named AFRIMMA Artist of the Year for 2020, Master KG also scopped the Song of the Year gong for “Jersusalema”; as well as Best Collaboration for a remix of the same song, which he did with Nigerian superstar Burna Boy.
And that was not all.
Master KG was named the 2020 Best Male Artist (Southern Africa), ahead of Zimbabwe’s artist Jah Prayzah and Slap Dee from Zambia, among other singers.
On accepting the awards, the South African music heavyweight paid tribute to his fans worldwide, saying he was particularly honoured to be named Best Artist for a second year running.
Apart from the Master KG show, other bug winners at the AFRIMMAs were South Africa’s Sho Madjozi (Best Southern African Female Artist), Nasty C (Best Male Rap Artist), and Kabza De Small (Producer of the Year).
Kabza De Small has made a name for himself in recent years, doing much to change the sound of South African music with the Amapiano revolution that has taken the scene by storm.
The 2020 AFRIMMAs were held virtually on November 14 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with artists’ performances streamed and broadcast from their respective locations.
Burna Boy had the highest number of nominations this year, with eight, and he won two awards: Crossing Boundaries with Music and Best Collaboration.
