Swakopmund - President Hage Geingob has concluded his visit to Portugal, where he attended the Horasis Global Meeting.
Geingob participated in the meeting, which took place in Cascais from 6 to 9 April under the theme ‘Catalysing the Benefits of Globalisation’, at the invitation of Horasis chairperson, Dr Frank-Jurgen Richter,.
During his visit, the Head of State also paid a courtesy call on Portugal’s President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, during which talks focused on investment and emphasised on stronger ties for economic development and fighting youth unemployment in Namibia.
A media statement issued by the Presidency on Tuesday said the two leaders also discussed how the two countries can deepen economic cooperation.
“Geingob also revealed that part of his visit to Portugal for the Horasis Global Meeting was centred on building investor confidence and promoting Namibia as a country with a conducive business environment and destination of choice for international business and investors,” the statement read.
The president described the meeting as a success, saying he shared with his counterpart how Namibia is intensifying efforts to develop the economy in order to fight poverty and unemployment.
With respect to Namibia’s role as Chair of the Southern African Development Community, Geingob highlighted the difficult journey the region has travelled over the past few months, with elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Madagascar and most recently, the Union of the Comoros.
“He singled out the DRC elections as having been challenging and emphasised that the mere fact that elections took place in a climate of relative calm without major casualties, was in itself a significant achievement,” the statement continued.
The visit concluded with Geingob affirming Namibia’s commitment to a multilateral order and international solidarity, during which he expressed concern about big powers not being open to the rest of the world. - Nampa
