Embattled NFA on course for normalisation

Windhoek – The scandal-hit Namibia Football Association (NFA) is on course to return to normality if the latest developments regarding elections are anything to go by.

NFA, under the former leadership of President Franz Mbidi, and secretary general Barry Rukoro, led to the sad state football affairs in the country. The football affairs are in disarray that the national Under 23 team forfeited their Olympic qualification match against Angola in 2018 because Mbidi and Rukoro failed to sign necessary paperwork that would have released funds to enable the youngsters to travel to Angola.

The sad state of affairs at NFA also spilled to its small wing, Namibia Premier League (NPL), which administers the premier league. The NPL has been unable to start the league for many months now, leaving close to 700 footballers struggling to survive.

This is the second time in recent years that the NPL has been unable to have the league running after the country at some point went 17 months without having a top division.

The Normalisation Committee (NC) under FIFA then entered the fray with the aim of restoring order at NFA and country’s football sector at large. But the NC, under its chairperson, Hilda Basson-Namundjebo, struggled to restore normalcy perhaps highlighting how rotten and complex things are at NFA.

The NC, however, managed to get rid of long serving secretary-general Rukoro and former president Mbidi to pave way for fresh elections. The NC has also suspended the NPL.

In a move seen as finally restoring order, the much awaited NFA election is set for 22 February 2020 with nominees announced this week.

The FIFA Normalisation Committee on Tuesday released the names of the presidential, first and second vice presidential and executive committee members of the NFA with the elective congress set for next month at the Safari Hotel in Windhoek.

The Normalisation Committee, by the virtue of being appointed by FIFA, is also the vetting committee and will be the electoral body on the day of the election. The electoral body will consist of chairperson Basson-Namundjebo, deputy chairman Franco Cosmos, Vivienne Katjiuongua, Gaby Ahrens and Matti Mwandingi.

Here are the candidates for the 28th ordinary congress of the NFA:
