Cairo - At a recent meeting, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) decided that women referees will officiate at the boys Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Tanzania.
The tournament is scheduled for April 14 to 28.
The landmark decision was the highlight of the CAF Referees Committee meeting held on February 26 in Cairo, Egypt, that was also attended by CAF president Ahmad Ahmad.
The ‘chosen ones’ are Tanzanian referee Jonesia Rukyaa Kabakama, and assistant referees’, Mary Wanjiru Njoroge (Kenya) and Lidwine Rakotozafinoro (Madagascar), who will be among the preselected 29-match officials to undergo a training course in Casablanca, Morocco from March 31 to April 4.
A total of 15 referees and 14 assistant referees from 25 member associations will undergo medical, physical and theoretical tests to select the conclusive list of match officials for the final tournament.
For the tournament, host Tanzania, Nigeria, Angola and Uganda are in Group A, while Guinea, Cameroon, Morocco and Senegal constitute Group B.
The semifinalists will qualify to represent the continent at the Under-17 World Cup at a yet to be confirmed venue. - Nampa/ANA
