Windhoek - Namibia’s national team selectors have selected a weakened team to take part in the Cosafa Cup as most of their star players are set to fly to the Middle East to prepare for the African Cup of Nations (Afcon) next month.

The Brave Warriors have their plate full as the country has three competitions to take part in within these couple of months.

The Brave Warriors are set to play in Cosafa, AFCON and Chan qualifiers within a space of three months.

Starting next week, a weakened Brave Warriors led by assistant coach Collin Benjamin will take locally based players to the 2019 Cosafa Senior Cup in South Africa.

The Cosafa Cup will start on May 25, on the same day Brave Warriors coach Ricardo Mannetti and his senior troops jet out for a training camp in the Middle East in preparation for Afcon set to take place in Egypt from 21 June to 19 July.

Namibia are in Group B of the Cosafa Cup and open their campaign on 26 May against Mozambique at the King Zwelithini Stadium and then play their second match at the same venue on 28 May against Malawi, before finishing off group action against Seychelles on 30 May at the Princess Magogo Stadium.

The winners of the group will face Zambia in the quarterfinal match set for 2 June at Princess Magogo Stadium.  The action will then move to the majestic Moses Mabhida Stadium as the loser plays in the Plate Section semifinals set for 4 June while the winner proceeds to cup semi finals on 5 June. The plate final is set for 7 June and so will be the third place playoff match. The Cosafa Cup final will be held on 8 June at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

Players called up for Cosafa are Ratanda Mbazuvara, Loydt Kazapua,  Larry Horaeb, Charles Hambira, Vitapi Ngaruka, Ivan Kamberipa, Emilio Martin, Aprocious Petrus,  Edmund Kambanda, Absalom Iimbondi, Aubrey Amseb, Dynamo Fredericks, Marcel Papama, Wesley Katjiteo, Llewelyn Stanley, McCartney Nawaseb ,Isaskar Gurirab, Junias Theophilus, Joslyn Kamatuka and Sadney Urikhob.

The national selectors are using the Cosafa competition to prepare the local players for the 2020 Chan qualifiers against Comoros on dates to be announced after Afcon.

Meanwhile, Mannetti was set to call up his Afcon squad on Thursday at the time of going to print.
