Gaborone - Botswana imported goods worth P4,4 billion (approximately US$380 million) in May 2020 compared to exports of P275 million (US$24 million), with the trade deficit being the worst monthly return recorded since 2013.

While Botswana’s exports were lower in April, the country recorded a substantial increase in both total exports and imports in May.

Statistics Botswana attributed these general increases across exports and imports to the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions on movements on May 21.

Botswana’s exports in May were 87,7 percent higher than the previous month, while imports rose more than 100 percent as businesses and individuals resumed near-normal economic activity after months of lockdown.

The Southern African Customs Union (SACU) continues to be Botswana’s major source of imports (82,2 percent).

Petroleum products account for the bulk of imports from SACU (27,5 percent), followed by diamonds (23,8 percent) and food, beverages and tobacco (14,5 percent).

Similarly, SACU was Botswana’s major export destination, accounting for 70,7 percent of goods and services from the country. Within the SACU region, South Africa accounted for 67 percent of Botswana’s exports, followed by Namibia with 3,7 percent.

The main commodity groups exported to South Africa were machinery and electrical equipment (29,4 percent), diamonds (16,8 percent), and salt and soda ash (16,5 percent).

Goods from Namibia represented 16,5 percent of Botswana’s imports during the month of May, with nearly the entire value stemming from the diamond sector.

The chief commodities exported to Namibia were machinery and electrical equipment (25,7 percent of total exports to that country).
