Angola’s Catumbela airport to receive certification in 2019

The national certification process for Catumbela airport in Benguela province may be completed in February 2019 if the Empresa Nacional de Navegação Aérea complies with security standards in the area adjacent to the infrastructure, the director-general of Angola’s National Civil Aviation Institute said in Lobito.

Rui Carreira specified that compliance with security standards is fundamental to ensure they become effective, reported Angop news agency. He made his comments on the side-lines of a briefing on the Catumbela airport certification process.

“The airport operator is obliged to resolve the security question so the licence can be obtained, he said, adding that to receive authorisation to operate as an international airport the company cannot permit the presence of animals, among other extraneous elements that might endanger aviation.

Carreira explained that the Catumbela airport process will begin as soon as certification of Luanda’s 4 de Fevereiro Airport is completed, expected to occur by this coming 31 August.

The Catumbela airport was restored and expanded in 2012. It will be an alternative to the one in Luanda, due to its size and capacity, with predictions indicating annual movement of around 2.2 million passengers.

The airport has two boarding bridges and a 3,700-metre runway, 16 check-in counters and 18 for migration services, as well as special areas for travellers in executive and first classes and spaces for restaurants and bars. - Macauhub
