Windhoek – Paulus Ambunda is set to defend his International Boxing Federating (IBO) Super Bantamweight title against undefeated American, Stephen Fulton, at the Eagle Bank Arena in Washington DC, US.
This was announced by Paulus ‘AC’ Immanuel, who is Ambunda’s trainer.
He said the Namibian will be the main supporting bout for Jarrett Hurd against Julian Williams on May 11.
“After the collapse of the rematch between Ambunda and Muhamad Ridhwan earlier this year, our international partners RingStar Promotions immediately started negotiating for him (Ambunda) to fight with Fulton in America,” Immanuel said.
He added that it is a big achievement for Ambunda to fight in the United States as the main undercard as this proves that Namibia is highly regarded in the world of boxing.
He rubbished claims that the IBO is not recognised in the United States of America, saying this is an opportunity for other Namibians to fight under this sanction body.
Immanuel added that Ambunda is ready as he has been training hard in anticipation of defending the title, he won on a split decision against Ridhwan in September 2018 in Singapore.
“We know the opponent, so we will prepare well. He is an undefeated prospect and he is one for the future. Ambunda has a few fights left in him because of his age, so this will definitely be an exciting fight,” he added.
On his part, Ambunda said preparations have been going well and he is excited about the prospective fight.
“As a boxer I am very excited about this opportunity as it has always been my dream to fight in the mecca of the sport. As for my opponent, I will inflict his first defeat on him,” he added.
Ambunda has 29 fights, won 27 of them with 11 coming via knockouts and losing two.
His opponent Fulton has 15 fights with no defeat.
Hurd will be defending his International Boxing Federation, World Boxing Association Super World Super Welterweight Title and IBO titles. - Nampa
