Age old skills of people living along the Great
Limpopo area are being showcased at a traditional facility, 80 kilometres south
of Chiredzi.
A brainchild of the Gaza Trust, Avuxeni Village was established in 2016
at Boli-Muhlanguleni on a piece of land donated by Chiredzi Rural
District Council.
Avuxeni is a Tsonga or Shangaan expression which means "People of the
East".
Hebert Hasani Phikela, a founder member of the village, noted Avuxeni was
established not only to showcase the rich local cultural heritage but
skills that enabled people of yester-years to be economically viable.
Visitors see first-hand craftwork and other various skills which were
common in the past.
They will also learn the art of making traditional salt, pounding grain
into meals and other skills that made life easier in the ancient times.
“This is to make people more skillful and independent so that they can
earn a decent living than to rely on begging in the community,” said
Phikela.
“The Avuxeni Village is a living village which showcases the intangible
and tangible heritage of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation
Area communities; Zimbabwe, Mozambique and South Africa that is Tsonga,
Ndau and Venda,” he added.
Phikela further revealed they were working in partnership with Chinhoyi
University of Technology (CUT) to develop the village. Other
stakeholders like  Malilangwe Trust were involved.
Admant Matsilele, the Chiredzi Council chairman, said that the village
has a special place in their hearts as it helps the community and other
outsiders to learn culture and various skills of life.

“This is because culture is identity which someone needs to have and
continue to learn,” said Matsilele.
Leonard Makondo, ward 10 councillor, said that the village was very
important as it taught people to be independent and hardworking.
“One cannot die of poverty if they are skillful,” he said.
