Harare – The scheduled back-to-back rugby friendly showdown between Namibia’s Welwitchias and Zimbabwe’s Sables has been called off.
The two countries were billed to face-off first at Harare Sports Club on June 12 before locking horns in Windhoek seven days later.
The friendlies were part of both teams preparations for the Africa Cup to be played early next month.
But, due to COVID-19 restrictions in place in Namibia, the matches had to be cancelled.
Contact sport remains banned in Namibia and the cancellation of the scheduled friendly ties has left the Sables looking for other options.
Zimbabwe Rugby CEO Sifiso Made said: “Yes the matches have been called off. As Zimbabwe, we are already looking at other options as we prepare for the first phase of the 2023 Rugby World Cup qualification next month.
“We will continue engaging Namibia because they are a strong opponent and we can learn a lot by playing them.”
Namibia are scheduled to host the Gold Cup Pool A tournament from July 1 to 12.
