Harare – The man co-ordinating the terror attacks that have plagued Cabo Delgado since 2017 has been identified as Bonomade Machude Omar from Mozabique.
Omar has been fingered as the head of the military and external affairs department of Islamic State in Mozambique.
The US State Department last week said other leading figures behind the terrorism that has attracted a multinational response are Sidan ag Hitta, Salem Ould Breihmatt, Ali Mohamed Rage of Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM), and Abdikadir Mohamed Abdikadir of al-Shabaab. All five have been classified as specially designated global terrorists (SDGT) under United States Executive Order 13224.
Omar, who also goes by the names Abu Sulayfa Muhammad and Ibn Omar, is said to be responsible for co-ordinating communications and facilitating the brutal attacks on civilians that have been witnessed in Mozambique and Tanzania’s Mtwara region.
A report by News24 chronicles the life of Omar, who is said to have been “calm” and “intelligent” as he grew up.
“To Mozambicans, Bonomade Machude Omar has become a known figure,’ says News24. “An investigation by the Centre for Investigative Journalism in Mozambique revealed he is the son of a retired school teacher and local politician. He attended high school in Mocimboa da Praia – a key port town that became an insurgent stronghold for nearly a year.
