Harare – Yes, Patson Daka is grabbing all the headlines in Austria’s Bundesliga, but Red Bull Salzburg is home to another Zambian hero in the person of Enock Mwepu.
The 23-year old Mwepu, whom the all-conquering Daka says is the man behind his success at Salzburg, has been one of the most influential players at the 13-time Austrian league champions, despite not always getting the spotlight.
The 23-year-old defensive midfielder is a box-to-box player in the mould of game’s greats and is regarded by many observers as the real driving force behind Salzburg’s three consecutive Bundesliga titles.
Consider what Daka says of Mwepu: “I was incredibly lucky to have a ‘computer’ on my side. All I had to do was convert his amazing passes into goals. Enock made life incredibly easy for me at Redbull Salzburg.”
And Europe’s giants, much as they are queuing up to sign Daka, are also taking notice of Mwepu.
Leading the chase for Mwepu are German Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund, with English Premiership sides Arsenals and Leeds United also interested in his services for the upcoming season.
The Zambian is combative and assertive in the middle of the park, and is a player who is so good at winning the ball off opponents that he has been nicknamed the Computer for his ability to read the game.
Mwepu began his career in his home country with Napsa Stars and then Kafue Celtic FC before signed onto the Salzburg roster in 2017 for a reported fee of US$2 million.
The club placed him with their development side, FC Liefering, before he joined the big boys in 2018. Now he is valued at US$18 million.
Along with countryman and teammate Daka, Mwepu was selected into Austria’s Bundesliga team of the season for 2020-21.
