A day after Zambian Vice-President Inonge Wina announced she was bowing out of national politics ahead of a general election in August, President Edgar Lungu has picked another woman – Professor Nkandu Luo – as his running mate.
VP Wina was Zambia’s first female VP as President Lungu’s number two, and now the Head of State and Government intends to have Prof Luo as the second.
On Sunday, the 80-year-old VP Wina said she would not be on the PF ticket for the August 12 polls, and a day later President Lungu unveiled Prof Luo as his running mate.
President Lungu described Prof Luo as a solid, intelligent and politically strong person.
“I know not all of you will accept her but diversity of opinion is what makes the world go round,” President Lungu said. “If you are not happy, wait for your time when you will appoint the people you like as for me, I am happy with my choice.”
President Lungu said he prayed and meditated over his choice of running mate.
“She is a solid politician. She is very intelligent and forthright and this is why some people don’t like her but as for me it’s Lungu na Luo (Lungu with Luo).
“So it’s good luck to all and lets campaign peacefully. We have taken oath to respect the electoral code of conduct and we will ensure there is law and order. Remember, I am still Head of State and Boma ni Boma and still in charge.”Prof Luo, a former Livestock and Fisheries Minister, thanked President Lungu for his show of confidence in her, and pledged to serve the nation with diligence and humility. She also commended the president for his continued faith in the capabilities of female leaders. – Agencies
