Windhoek – Dr Sam Nujoma’s contributions to Namibia’s liberation are unparalleled, and his efforts to build a united and prosperous nation post-Independence will forever be cherished, President Hage Geingob has said.
The Namibian Head of State and Government made the remarks on May 12, when the nation’s Founding President turned 92-years-old.
Dr Nujoma’s birthday is celebrated nationally as the 12 May Movement, though the liberation icon this year opted for low-key celebrations, spending the day with his family at his residence in recognition of COVID-19 protocols limiting the size of gatherings.
A flood of congratulatory messages – from the wings of the ruling SWAPO Party, government ministries and departments, business and ordinary Namibians – characterised May 12 this year.
Leading the congratulatory messages was President Geingob, who said Dr Nujoma was a visionary who worked tirelessly for the betterment of Namibia and its people.
“The history of Namibia is defined by the fight against colonial oppression, racism and tyranny. Under the visionary leadership of our Founding President, Independence was achieved after a bitter struggle and Namibia embarked on a path of sustained peace, reconciliation and development,” President Geingob said.
He continued: “Our Independence would not have been possible without Comrade Nujoma spearheading the mobilisation of Namibians from all walks of life in a unified cause, fighting against the injustices of colonial oppression. At independence, on 21 March 1990, Comrade Nujoma invested with utmost devotion his energies towards developing a free nation. It is a task Comrade Nujoma performed admirably until 2005.”
President Geingob said Dr Nujoma was “our icon, a true hero and the epitome of the ideals of our struggle and sacrifice”.
“On this day, we pay tribute to this towering figure who dedicated his life to the cause of freedom and the development of an Independent Namibia. As we celebrate the birthday of this extraordinary Namibian, we are reminded about the values of hard work, solidarity and commitment towards realising prosperity for all in the second phase of our struggle.”
President Geingob said Dr Nujoma continued to be a great source of guidance and leadership.
“In retirement, and specifically during this difficult period of COVID-19, Comrade Nujoma has continued to show exemplary commitment to the work of the SWAPO Party-led Government in building a better Namibia by always being available when we call on him for advice,” he said.
