Harare – Red-hot Chipolopolo forward Patson Daka’s exploits in the Austrian Bundesliga have not gone unnoticed, as English Premier League sides have reportedly upped the stakes as they try and secure the soccer star’s signature.
The 22-year-old plies his trade for Red Bull Salzburg, where he is top goal-scorer in Bundesliga. His 27 goals in 31 matches across all competitions in 2020-2021 have elicited the interest of Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool, according to Salzburger Nachrichten.
At the time of writing, Daka had scored 20 league goals in just 18 matches. His tally is six gaols higher than the next best scorer, Sekou Koita of Mali.
Daka moved to Red Bull Salzburg from Kafue Celtic of Zambia in 2017 for a reported fee of US$350,000, and his stock has been rising ever since. After scoring 61 goals in 114 games for the Austrian side, the Chipolopolo forward is now valued at close to US$20 million.
His prowess in front of goal has seen him gracing the March 2021 cover of respected football magazine, World Soccer. He features on the cover alongside superstars Luis Suarez of Uruguay and Zlatan Ibrahimovic of Sweden.
Zambia national team coach Milutin Sredejovic purrs when asked to describe Daka.
“He could be compared to Sadio Mane or Samuel Eto’o, with the level of skill and speed that he has, with the sense for space, sense of positioning, in the right place at the right time. I would say he’s on the road to replace what Samuel Eto’o once was in representing Africa and African football,” said Sredejovic recently.
And Daka is hungry for success.
“To see our big brothers like (Pierre-Emerick) Aubameyang, (Mohamed) Salah and (Sadio) Mane, it’s something that gives me the dream that I can also make it. I can be like them. They are my inspiration, knowing that they also come from Africa,” said Daka in a January interview with BBC.
