Egypt has been selected as host of the 2023 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations as well as the maiden women’s CAF Champions League in 2021.
The decision was made at the weekend by the CAF Executive Committee in Kigali, Rwanda.
Egypt hosted the 2019 Africa U23 Cup of Nations, which it won, and it will be the first time the Pharaohs host the tournament since 1991, which they also won.
The 2023 Africa U20 Cup of Nations would act as a qualifier for the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Indonesia after the 2021 U20 World Cup was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Overall Egypt had won the U20 AFCON four times before, in 1981, 1991, 2003, and 2013, while missing out on the most recent one after they had to withdraw from the qualifiers due to a COVID-19 outbreak in the squad.
Moreover, the 2021 CAF Women’s Champions League, which will be the first-ever of its kind in Africa, and will also take place in Egypt.
The format of the first edition will see champions of each of the six CAF Zones play for a spot in the competition. They are joined by the hosts and a wild card entry. The tournament then will be played in two groups of four teams.Meanwhile, the 2023 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations will take place in Algeria, while Mozambique will be hosting the 2022 Beach AFCON. – King Fut
