Windhoek – Tanzanian Afrobeat sensation Diamond Platinumz is up for a BET Award in the Best International Act category at the June 27 ceremony in Los Angeles in the United States.
Other African stars hoping to land the prestigious award are Burna Boy, Wizkid and Aya Nakamura; and they will also be up against American and European Acts Young T, Bugsey, Headie One, Youssoupha and Emcida.
Diamond Platinumz has been building his brand globally, and his Wasafi Classic Baby label recently partnered Warner Music Group and Ziliki Media to expand his music worldwide.
The flamboyant Swahili singer has consistently churned out hit music, and he has become famed for his energetic live performances.
Established in 2001 by the Black Entertainment Television network, the awards recognise outstanding achievements by black entertainers in music, acting and sports, amongst other categories.
African acts that have landed Best International Act gongs include Sakordie, Stonebwoy, Wizkid, Black Coffee, 2Baba and D’banj.
Grammy Award-winning Burna Boy won the back-to-back in 2019 and 2020 and will be looking to make it a hat-trick this year.
Fellow Nigerian Wizkid has been topping charts with international collaborations following the success of his highly rated Made in Lagos, which also carries a collabo with Burna Boy.
Mali-born French RnB singing pop singer Aya Nakamura is the only female on the list this year. She hit the big time in 2018 after the release “Djadja”. Her last album, a self-titled effort, came in November 2020 and on May 27 this year, she dropped the single “Bobo”, which has more than 3.1 million online views in the week of its release.
Connie Orlando – the BET head of specials, music programming and music strategy – was quoted saying of this year’s awards: “We’re back and excited to bring the culture’s biggest night, the 2021 BET Awards, safely back to Los Angeles to celebrate this year’s incredible roster of nominees.
“We broke ground as one of the first award shows to move forward during the global pandemic and we are ready to take our pioneer status to the next level with the return of an audience to celebrate the best and brightest creative minds in the entertainment industry.”
