Johannesburg – The South African senior women’s national soccer team, Banyana Banyana, will represent Southern Africa at the Aisha Buhari Cup in Nigeria.
Sponsored by Nigerian First Lady Aisha Buhari, the crème de la crème of African women’s football will face off in the tournament from September 13 to 21.
The continent’s top six national teams have been drawn in two groups for the tourney. Group A consists of hosts Nigeria, Morocco and Mali; while Banyana Banyana are in Group B with Ghana and Cameroon.
Nigeria, Cameroon and South Africa are the three leading African countries according to FIFA rankings; with Ghana, Mali and Morocco occupying positions 4, 5 and 6 respectively.
Nigeria and Morocco set the ball rolling on September 13 in the first match of the tournament with Cameroon and Ghana clashing later in the day in another potentially exciting encounter.
Banyana Banyana kick-start their campaign against Cameroon on September 15 and round off their group stage matches with a clash against Ghana on September 17.
The two top teams in each Group proceed to the semi-finals.
Among top officials expected at the tournament is CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe.
The teams will use the tournament to fine-tune preparations for the upcoming CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers scheduled to commence in October.
Director of the Aisha Buhari tournament, Ms Aisha Falode, last week said the tournament was about more than just football, and lauded First Lady Buhari’s commitment to women’s advancement.
