Windhoek - This year’s Olympic Games will come a bit early for residents of Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, as there are plans to stage a road race in celebration of the world’s biggest sporting event which begins next month in London.

The country’s biggest running and walking club, Windhoek Harriers, has organised a road race for June 23 to celebrate the 2012 Summer Olympic Games that will take place from July 27 to August 12, 2012.

Namibia will be represented at the premier global sporting event.

Dubbed the Corporate Guarantee Olympic Race, the Windhoek road race will start at 6.30am at the Dr Jubber Hockey Fields in Olympia. There will be a 15km road race for walkers and runners, as well as a 5km fun walk and fun run.

Both amateur and professional athletes are expected to take part in the 15km road race.

According to a statement issued by the Windhoek Harriers club, the route for the 15km race will pass mainly through Olympia and Kleine Kuppe suburbs.

The 5km race will be the first part of the 15km route.

Starting times for the different races are as follows: 15km walk (6.30am); 15km run (7am); 5km fun walk/run (7.30am).
